
The eleventh president of Alfred University, Howard R. Neville, was born in 1936. He was a native to Kankakee, Illinois. He received his BS in business administration from the University of Illinois, his M.B.A. in 1952 from Louisiana State University in 1952 and his Ph.D. in economics from Michigan State University in 1956. He worked at Michigan State University from 1955-1969 as an assistant professor of economics in addition to being the provost from 1963-1969. In 1969 he became president of Claremont's Men's College. From 1970-1973 he was the Executive Vice President for Administration at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He served as President of the University of Maine at Orono from 1973-1979. He came to Alfred in 1979 and remained there until he was forced to retire in 1981 due to illness. He died on December 24, 1981 in Houston, Texas, of a brain tumor. He and his wife, Frederica, never had children.
