1908
When the Alfred Union School District building (Kanakadea Hall) was damaged by fire in 1908, AU traded the land site on Park Street for use of Kanakadea Hall. There, the Alfred Union School District built the Alfred High School which was used until 1940 when Alfred-Almond Central School was created. The university then purchased the structure and renamed it South Hall. As South Hall, the building contained offices, classrooms and the Women’s Gym. In 1976, AU leased the building to Allegany ARC to house Piece Work Industries (PWI), a rehabilitation workshop. In 1978, A.U. applied for National Historic Register status. In 1986, Physical Plant developed a portion for campus storage. At one time plans were to demolish the structure and save the terra cotta roof to be incorporated into a ceramic art museum facility on that site. It remains vacant awaiting a verdict on future use.
