Six Sayles Street

1910

Originally built as a private residence, Six Sayles Street was the home for Pi Alpha Pi Sorority from 1923-1963. The campus radio station operated in the dining room until the mid 70’s; and it was used as a residence hall and for Steinheim storage during the 1970s. It also housed OZ Hotline, a 24-hour emergency counseling service manned by students. In 1986, the basement was renovated and used for the Allegany County Family Planning Center. In 1994, AU benefactor Lea R. Powell provided funds for the renovation of the house into a new home for the Lea R. Powell Institute for Children and Family Services at AU, as well as the Center for Rural School Psychology and the Rural Justice Institute. The renovated facility, which included a 5,000 square foot addition, was dedicated in October 2002.
