The Heating Plant began supplying steam in February 1918 to several buildings on campus. Those using steam for heating purposes probably included The Brick, Kanakadea, Alumni Hall, Babcock Hall, Binns Hall, Kenyon Hall, and perhaps others. Presently it serves the Steinheim, Howell Hall, Alumni Hall, Herrick Library, The Brick, Kanakadea, Powell Campus Center, Seidlin, Myers, Perlman, Science Center, Binns-Merrill, Harder, McMahon, Bartlett, Cannon, Barresi, Davis Gym, McLane Center, Research Building, Physical Plant, Greene, and Carnegie. An additional wing was added in 1950. In 1970, another wing was added to the present building housing a new 40,000-pound per hour boiler. The new wing is used for storage and a plumbing shop, and contains an emergency generator to supply electricity in an emergency to the Heating Plant, Physical Plant, Greene and Carnegie Hall.
