Originally called Chapel Hall and later Academy Hall, Alumni Hall is the oldest original building on the Alfred University campus. In 1927, it was renamed Alumni Hall. It was first used as a chapel, and since as an auditorium, gymnasium, classrooms, laboratory, library, and movie theater. It was closed in 1972 after being declared a fire hazard but continued to be used as a storage facility until 1986. In 1978, A.U. applied for National Historic Register status. Beginning in March 1985, it was renovated to create new office space for The Graduate School, Financial Aid, and Admissions. Alumni Hall was gutted and a concrete and steel structure built inside the original wood building. Work was completed in April 1986 and a rededication ceremony was part of the University’s Sesquicentennial celebration.
