McLane Center

1971

McLane Center, built in 1971 on the east side of North Main Street on land formerly used for Terra Cotta Field, is home of the Alfred University athletics program and physical education department. From c. 1890 until fire destroyed it in 1909, the Celadon Terra Cotta Company’s manufacturing facility was located on the site. All that remained was the Terra Cotta office building, which was moved to the southeast corner of Pine and Main Streets. Named after long-time Athletic Director James A. McLane, the building facilities include a basketball arena that seats 2,500, the Edward Lebohner Pool, an Olympic size aquatic facility, handball courts, saunas, and the Fred Gibbs Fitness Center. A field house was added in 1982, providing additional team lockerrooms, showers and more offices for coaching personnel.
